“I really hope they like my proposal. I think my magazine will be peng!”

It’s hard times for young school-leavers at the moment, the economic crisis has taken its toll and the news is all doom and gloom with statistics showing unbelievably high levels of youth unemployment. So we ‘re doing our bit and as part of our commitment to fostering new talent in our hometown, we’re giving our help and services to the students of our local school – Passmores Academy, Harlow. (the school made famous in the channel four award winning documentary ‘Educating Essex’

Last month we set the students a brief, which they’ve got their marketing and creative teeth into it! So far year 10 students have researched, written, named – and are now at the first stage of designing – a magazine to rival Men’s Health. Once the designs are complete they’ll plan and create a marketing campaign for it using whatever media they see fit.

They are clearly enjoying the project – one student exclaimed “This is the coolest thing I have done at school. It’s like having a real job!”

Apart from coaching the students every step of the way, building their confidence and opening their eyes to opportunities within the creative media sector. Two top performing students will be awarded the title Mulberry’s Young Marketeer 2013. The winners will be selected in January, they’ll have their magazine professionally printed and come in for two weeks work experience at Mulberry. Here they become involved with all aspects of the business, taking a job from the brief stage right through to a client presentation, but more importantly they are given a ‘Mulberry Mentor’ who helps them in every way possible all the way through leave school and beyond. If they wish to enter into the creative media world or any related industry we’ll pull out all the stops to help them succeed.

The Mulberry Young Marketeer of the year 2013 is just the first in a number of local initiatives Mulberry’s launching over the next two years, supporting Essex businesses and education, after all there’s no better place to start than at school.
